Liat Z. Rubin is a director and producer dedicated to uncovering untold stories and deepening our connection to history.

Liat Z. Rubin is a director, producer, and founder of LZR Productions. She is currently a coordinating producer at Firelight Films and a PBS Accelerator Fellow. Liat has produced numerous series and films for HBO, MGM+, Amazon, and more. She was a producer on HBO’s civil rights docuseries, EYES ON THE PRIZE III: WE WHO BELIEVE IN FREEDOM CANNOT REST, and on MGM+/Amazon’s Emmy-nominated history of black cinema docuseries, HOLLYWOOD BLACK. Previously, she co-produced the 2021 documentary special EYES ON THE PRIZE: HALLOWED GROUND (MAX). 

As the founder of LZR Productions, she has produced numerous award-winning independent narrative and documentary projects. Her narrative short films include queer coming of age narrative short Today & Tmrw (2026) and narrative comedy HOT SEAT (2024) which was awarded a NewFest Jury Award. She also produced the documentary short 51ST STATE about a young black organizer’s fight for DC statehood, which premiered at DC/DOX 2024 and DOC NYC 2024, where it was awarded Special Mention. Her work has also screened at Tribeca International Film Festival, Aspen Shortsfest, Montclair Film Festival, Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival, and more. 

She is currently directing a feature documentary about a boundary breaking modern dancer.

Alongside her producing roles, Liat co-directed MakeMake Residencies: a nine-month paid residency program designed to open pathways for diverse professionals working in the entertainment industry. The program is supported by the Netflix Fund for Creative Equity and MakeMake Entertainment.

Liat has worked with top filmmakers including Justin Simien, Melina Matsoukas, Dawn Porter, Smriti Mundhra, Asako Gladsjo, Angus Wall, Jason Koenig, Geeta Gandbhir, and more.

Liat is also a member of Brown Girls Doc Mafia and The Documentary Producers Alliance.
